The time of the burial mound is unclear as it has never been archaeologically examined. Like other burial mounds, it could come from the younger Swedish Iron Age or the Vendel Age. According to legend, it is the grave of King Ingjald Illråde (the Malevolent), who according to tradition lived in the second half of the 1st millennium AD and committed suicide at Lake Runnviken.

The Ingjaldshögen burial mound on the burial ground at Ingjaldshögen is also associated with Ingjald Illråde.

It is believed that the characteristic crater on the King's hill Uppsa kulle can be traced back to the collapse of the burial chamber.

Uppsa kulle is the third largest burial mound in Sweden. Large hills with a diameter of more than 30 meters are usually called Kungshögen ( German  "Königshügel" ) in Sweden . They are mainly to be found around the Mälaren . The large mounds often date from the younger Iron Age. The largest hill is Anundshög in Västmanland , other large burial mounds are Grönehög in Bohuslän , Högom in Medelpad , Inglinge Hög in Småland , Ledbergs kulle in Östergötland , Skalunda Hög in Västergötland , Ströbo Hög in Västmanland and the three hills in Alt-Uppsala in Uppland .

Uppsa kulle is the largest hill on a cemetery around 150 meters long and 25 to 50 meters wide, which includes two other, smaller burial mounds and three round stone settings.
