Political career

Career in the ÖDP

In 1983 he joined the Bavarian ÖDP , which had been founded two years earlier . In 1987 and 1988 and from 1991 to 1995 he was chairman of the Ödp district association of Passau. Since April 1, 1991, he has been the full-time regional manager of the Bavarian ödp, whose regional office is in Passau . He has been a member of the Passau City Council since 1992 ; there he was parliamentary group chairman from 2002 to 2008. In addition, he was district chairman of the Lower Bavarian ödp from 1999 to 2006.

The election results of his party in Passau have increased continuously since the 1990s; In 2002 it achieved a double-digit result for the first time with 10.5% and five seats, which it was able to increase in 2008 to 15.7% and seven seats. Mangold always received the most votes among the candidates. Thus, Passau is Germany's most distinctive stronghold of the ödp at the level of the districts and urban districts.

On May 29, 2008, he was unanimously nominated by his party as a direct candidate for the Passau-Ost constituency in the Bavarian state election on September 28, 2008 .

Mayor of Passau

In the Mayor election of Passau in March 2008 , he entered the race as a candidate for his party and achieved 12.65%. In the course of the run-off election, which took place between incumbent Albert Zankl (CSU) and his challenger Jürgen Dupper (SPD), he made a recommendation for the latter. After Dupper was elected the new mayor, he pleaded that Mangold should receive the post as second mayor. He justified this with its good result in the mayoral election. At the constituent meeting of the city council on May 8th of the same year, he was elected second mayor with 25 to 17 votes against the previous incumbent Dagmar Plenk (CSU).

Due to his new office as mayor in Passau, he only works part-time as state manager.

In the municipal elections in Bavaria in 2014 , he received 8.98% of the vote as a candidate for mayor for Passau.

Further memberships

Mangold is also a member of the Verkehrsclub Deutschland , Arbeiterwohlfahrt , Pro Bahn , ADFC and several Lower Bavarian citizens' initiatives.

Awards

On April 30, 2008, Mangold received the Ring of Honor of the City of Passau from the outgoing Mayor of Passau, Zankl, for his work in local politics .
