Albert Zankl

Albert Zankl (born April 8, 1954 in Passau ) is a German entrepreneur and local politician of the CSU . From 2002 to the end of April 2008 he was Lord Mayor of the independent city of Passau.

Private career

Zankl attended the St. Anton elementary school and then the Adalbert-Stifter-Gymnasium . He graduated from the state college and then studied at the Landshut University of Applied Sciences . He graduated with a degree in business administration (FH).

In 1977 he joined his parents' painting business, which he took over as managing director in 1987.

Political career

In 1993 Albert Zankl joined the CSU and was elected to the city council in Passau in 1996. In the local elections on 3./17. March 2002 he prevailed in a runoff election with 53.3% of the votes against the incumbent Willi Schmöller and became Lord Mayor of Passau. During his tenure, he continued the urban redevelopment that his predecessor had begun in the New Center .

In the following local elections on March 2 and 16, 2008, Zankl was defeated on March 16, 2008 by the SPD candidate Jürgen Dupper in the runoff election with 38.59% to 61.41%, after he had already had two weeks earlier in the first ballot 37.67% to 46.75% lost out. Last but not least, the fact that the ödp candidate Urban Mangold , who had won 12.65% in the first ballot, had recommended Dupper for the second ballot to his disadvantage . Zankl accepted the city council mandate, which he had achieved with the most votes after Dupper. In November 2010 he resigned from all offices in order to concentrate on his company.
