Urban Wiesing (born July 31, 1958 in Ahlen ) is a German medical historian and medical ethicist . He is director of the Institute for Ethics and the History of Medicine at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen . His work focuses on philosophy and medicine, ethical aspects of modern technologies in medicine and the history of medicine.

Life

Urban Wiesing, brother of the philosopher Lambert Wiesing , studied medicine , philosophy , sociology and medical history in Münster and Berlin and graduated in 1986 with the Dr. med. from. From 1986 to 1988 Wiesing worked as a doctor in anesthesiology and internal medicine . From 1988 to 1998 he was an assistant at the Institute for the History and Theory of Medicine, University of Münster (with Nelly Tsouyopoulos and Richard Toellner ). In 1992 he received his habilitation in the subject “Theory and History of Medicine” and in 1994 he received his doctorate in philosophy.

Since 1998 he has held the chair for ethics in medicine at the University of Tübingen, since 2002 he has been director of the Institute for Ethics and History of Medicine, University of Tübingen, where he has also been the spokesman for the working group University of Tübingen under National Socialism since 2007 .

From 2004 to 2013 Wiesing was chairman of the Central Ethics Committee at the German Medical Association , and since 2009 he has been a member of the Medical Ethics Committee of the World Medical Association . In 2011 he became spokesman for the International Center for Ethics in Science at the University of Tübingen and has been a member of the board since 2015. From 2011 to 2013 Wiesing was Advisor and member of the Working Group of the World Medical Association for the revision of the Declaration of Helsinki . In the same position, he worked from 2015 to 2017 on a revision of the Geneva Vow of the World Medical Association and since 2018 on the revision of the International Code of Medical Ethics of the World Medical Association.

In the 2017 summer semester he was a Senior Fellow at the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg in Greifswald.

In 2011 Wiesing was appointed a member of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
