Richard Toellner

Richard Toellner (born January 2, 1930 in Werther (Westphalia) ; † January 2, 2019 in the Amelungsborn Monastery ) was a German medical historian .

Life

Toellner studied medicine , Protestant theology and history in Mainz , Tübingen and Rome. From 1971 to 1974 he was director of the Institute for the History of Medicine at the Free University of Berlin , then from 1974 to 1995 director of the Institute for Theory and History of Medicine at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . In 1983 he was also a co-founder and until 1988 a member of the board of the working group of medical ethics commissions in the Federal Republic of Germany and from 1988 to 1998 chairman of the ethics committee of the Medical Faculty of Münster and the State Medical Association of Westphalia-Lippe . His academic students and staff include Wolfgang U. Eckart and Nelly Tsouyopoulos . From 1987 Toellner was a member of the Leopoldina . Richard Toellner was co-author of the medical dictionary edited by Wolfgang U. Eckart and Christoph Gradmann , the third edition of which appeared in 2006. He also wrote a biography of Albrecht von Haller .

Toellner's main areas of work were the history of medicine as a science in the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the 19th century and the Third Reich . He also dealt particularly intensively with questions of medical ethics .

Toellner lived in Negenborn . He died in early January 2019 on his 89th birthday. The nursing scientist Ulrike Toellner-Bauer (1959–2012) was his daughter.
