Uri Mayer

Uri Mayer (born August 4, 1946 in Târgu Mureş ) is a Canadian conductor and violist.

Born in Romania, Mayer grew up in Israel. He attended the Tel Aviv Conservatory from 1958 to 1964 and studied with Ödön Pártos and Gary Bertini at the Rubin Music Academy of Tel Aviv University until 1968 . From 1964 to 1970 he was Assistant Conductor of the National Youth Orchestra of Israel.

In 1968 he received a Damrosch scholarship and studied conducting with Jean Paul Morel and viola with Walter Trampler at the Juilliard School of Music until 1970 . He also conducted the New York Youth Symphony , performed with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and was first violist of the American Symphony Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski , who offered him an assistant position in 1970.

Mayer decided to go to Canada and in 1970 became principal violist with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra . In 1971 he received second prize at the international viola competition in Munich and in the following year a prize at the international music competition in Geneva . From 1974 to 1976 he was musical director of the University Philharmonia and the Contemporary Directions Ensemble at the University of Michigan . He then returned to the Montreal Symphony Orchestra as the first violist and became its assistant conductor in 1980.

During this time he taught conducting at McGill University and directed the university's symphony orchestra, with which he made recordings of works by Donald Steven , Brian Cherney and John Rea . In 1977 he received the audience award at the International Conducting Competition in Budapest, and two years later the silver medal at the Fitelberg Competition in Poland.

From 1981 to 1995 Mayer was musical director of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra , with whom he made numerous recordings for the CBC , including a. with works by Malcolm Forsyth and Oskar Morawetz . In addition, he was musical director of the Rice University Orchestra in Houston from 1986 to 1988 and chief conductor of the Orchestra London Canada from 1988 to 1994 .

From 1991 to 1999 he was artistic director of the Israel Sinfonietta , and from 1994 to 2000 chief conductor of the Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra in Osaka. At the same time he was a regular guest conductor for the National Ballet of Canada until 2003 .

He taught conducting a. a. at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and teaches at the University of Toronto .
