Urve Tiidus (born June 6, 1954 in Rapla ) is an Estonian politician . She belongs to the liberal reform party ( Eesti Reformierakond ). From December 2013 to April 2015 she was Estonian Minister of Culture.

life and career

Urve Tiidus was born Urve Uussaar in the city of Rapla. In 1972 she graduated from high school in Tallinn . She then studied English at the State University of Tartu until 1977 . After that, she went to Estonian television . There she worked as a spokesperson and editor for children's and youth programs. She also translated from English.

In December 1998 Tiidus joined the liberal reform party ( Reformierakond ). From 1999 to 2001 she was the head of the cultural and educational department in the Kuressaare city ​​council on the island of Saaremaa . In 2001 she switched to the private Estonian television broadcaster Kanal 2 as a newscaster and anchorwoman .

From 2005 to 2011 Tiidus was Lord Mayor of the city of Kuressaare. In the 2011 parliamentary elections, she was elected to the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) for the Reform Party .

In December 2013, Tiidus was appointed Minister of Culture in Prime Minister Andrus Ansip's cabinet. Her predecessor, Rein Lang , resigned after the opposition and journalists' associations accused him of influencing the state-sponsored cultural newspaper Sirp . After the end of the governing coalition, she held the same office in the coalition government under Prime Minister Taavi .

On April 9, 2015, Tiidus left the cabinet with the formation of a new coalition government . She returned as a member of the Estonian parliament.

Private life

Urve Tiidus is married. She has a son and a daughter.
