The jungle tour is a premium hiking trail through the Saarkohlenwald in Saarland . The hiking trail is also shaped by the earlier mining of the von der Heydt mine (Saarbrücken) . The name of the hike refers to the jungle project of the Saarland Ministry of the Environment, the SaarForst Landesbetrieb and the NABU des Saarland, which started in 1997 and has been contractually regulated since 2002. An area of over 1000 hectares in the north of Saarbrücken was declared a nature reserve and has not been used for forestry since then. It should be noted, however, that despite the name "primeval forest at the gates of the city" it is not a primeval forest , as it is by definition largely untouched by humans.

description

The Steinbachstau

The jungle tour starts at the Neuhaus barn ; since 1854 the building has been used as a forester's house. The path leads downhill over a meadow into the forest, past the washing fountain of the Neuhauser Hof . After about 100 meters the path leads to the right and you can see the tree house nearby. After about 100 meters, a path goes downhill to the left past three mighty oaks , and following a ditch you reach the Steinbach Valley . Here the path leads down the stream and you reach the Gouvysweiher . It is named after a former steel entrepreneur and merchant who built a farm in this valley location in the middle of the 18th century to raise cattle and pigs.

Beginning and end of the tour:
The forester's house Scheune Neuhaus

After the pond you reach the Steinbachstau; the path of the stream has been blocked by tailings, and as a result a swampy landscape with dead trees has arisen. A bridge crosses the drainage water of the heap of the former Steinbachschacht, the heap body of which is now entered by hikers. The Steinbach shaft belonged to the von der Heydt mine and was dug in 1903 at the end of the Burbach tunnel and reached a depth of 650 meters. After crossing the stockpile to reach another Bergehalde . This pointed cone dump, popularly known as Kleiner Fuji , was created by pouring off tailings from the cherry tail shaft , which also belonged to the von der Heydt mine.

Now it goes uphill to the right through an oak grove and you pass several bomb craters from the Second World War and you reach a gravel path via the path. You cross a crossroads in the forest, from which the Naturfreundehaus Kirschheck is about 50 meters to the left . This building is a former Steigerhaus and is another relic of mining in the north of Saarbrücken. After crossing the intersection, you reach the Friedwald , which was opened in 2005. It was nationwide the first cemetery in a nature reserve. After walking along the edge of the cemetery, you reach the Holländerbrunnen . Here you follow a miner's path that led from Riegelsberg to the Steinbachschacht. After about 500 meters, it goes downhill to the right into a brook valley, which is crossed. Now it goes uphill through a tall beech and oak forest, and this path takes you to the starting point of the hike, the forester's house Neuhaus.
