Vélingara crater
The Vélingara crater (also called the Vélingara ring structure ) is located near Vélingara in the Kolda region in southern Senegal ( West Africa ).
There the almost circular structure spreads out with a diameter of 48 km, with its center about 12 km south-southwest of the already mentioned Vélingara. Vélingara is located as well as the cities Kounkané and Diaobé-Kabendou the crater-inner edge, which also clockwise from the northeast to southwest, the national road N 6 follows and on the way from Tambacounda to Ziguinchor connects the three cities.
The crater structure is located in the east of the Senegalese part of Casamance , which lies between Gambia and Guinea-Bissau . While its northern foothills almost touch the border of the first-mentioned neighboring country, its southern slope is only about 20 km from the latter.
It is possible that the Vélingara crater represents a meteorite impact crater covered by sediments and disfigured by erosion . Its center is called Anambé Basin , a basin-like depression with a 7.5 km² lake that extends over the Anambé River (tributary of the Kayanga ) drains.
