Kounkané is a town in the Vélingara department of the Kolda region , in the south of Senegal .

Geographical location

Kounkané is located in the west of the Vélingara department , in the east of the Casamance and on the southern edge of the Vélingara crater . To the west of the city, the Niandouba flows south to the Kayanga on its way out of the crater . The Niandouba separates the cities of Kounkané and Diaobé-Kabendou from one another, but they are connected to each other by a combined dam-bridge construction around 220 meters long.

Kounkané is located 413 kilometers southeast of Dakar , 93 kilometers east of the regional prefecture of Kolda and 24 kilometers south of Vélingara .

history

The village of Kounkané achieved the status of a commune (city) in 2008. The urban area, measured from the intersection of the road to Sous-Préfecture with the N6, extends a certain number of kilometers in all four directions. This resulted in a city area of ​​32.0 km². The borders include the ten villages Saré Bourang, Saré Samba Laba, Thianfara Maoundé, Sara Sory, Médina Oumar, Ndorna Bounda, Missirah Mamadou, Médina Pathé, Saré Kalilou and Koulandiala and extend in the west to the Niandouba River .
