The first part of the series was initially only released for the PlayStation in 1997 , a PC version was not released until 1999. A Nintendo 64 version was also released under the name V-Rally Edition '99. In this first version there were a total of ten rally vehicles , all with the original license. The races were held on tracks in eight countries, including France , Spain and Indonesia . The PC version in particular , which received an update compared to the PlayStation version, impressed with its graphics. The US version from Electronic Arts included a Toyota Corolla as an additional new vehicle. However, due to poor controls, the game wasn't a huge commercial success.

One of the game's toughest competitors was the Colin McRae Rally , released in 1998 .

V-Rally 2

In the same year as the PC version of V-Rally , V-Rally 2 was released for the PlayStation. Since the publisher Infogrames has now acquired the trademark rights to Atari , they published it under this name in Europe. Electronic Arts again secured the rights for North America and at the same time launched the PlayStation version in North America under the name Need for Speed V-Rally 2. A year later, a version for Sega's Dreamcast and the PC was also released. The Dreamcast version was named Test Driver in North America .

New features compared to its predecessor included a multiplayer mode, improved graphics, now 17 vehicles and now a total of 12 countries in which people drive. The ratings of various magazines were correspondingly good. The second part made the series popular.

V-Rally 3

V-Rally 3 was released in June 2002 for the PlayStation 2 and Game Boy Advance platforms . In 2003, ports for PC ( Windows ), Xbox and GameCube also followed . In addition to 20 official vehicles, the game had 24 racetracks in four countries. In Version 3, V-Rally also included real drivers for the first time, namely Gilles Panizzi , Richard Burns , Carlos Sainz , Philippe Bugalski , Piero Liatti and Tommi Mäkinen .
