VS Varadarajan

VS Varadarajan ( Veeravalli Seshadri Varadarajan ; born May 18, 1937 in Bangalore or Chennai ; † April 27, 2019 ) was an Indian - American mathematician .

Life

Varadarajan graduated from the University of Madras (then Presidential College ) with a bachelor's degree in 1957 and received his doctorate in 1959 from the Indian Statistical Institute under CR Rao (Convergence of Stochastic Processes). He then went to the University of Washington in Seattle and the Institute for Advanced Study in 1968 before going to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he became a professor.

At first he dealt with probability theory and statistics, but after meeting Harish-Chandra in 1960, whose close friend and student he became, he switched to the theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras and their representations with applications in quantum mechanics. He also wrote some famous textbooks about it. Later he dealt with meromorphic differential equations (together with Donald Babbitt) and with supersymmetry , super-Lie groups and supersymmetric homogeneous spaces.

In 1998 he received the Lars Onsager Medal from the University of Trondheim . In 1968/69 he was a Sloan Research Fellow , and in 1992 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Geneva . He was a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .

He was the editor of Harish-Chandra's Collected Treatises (1984).
