VIA CoreFusion Processor Platform is a name from VIA Technologies for a combination of main processor and northbridge . An x86-compatible processor core from Centaur Technology is used as the main processor .

development

Although the CoreFusion concept was announced for the first time at CeBIT 2003, it took until 2005 before the first products were available. The CoreFusion platform consists of two products, an expansion was planned but never implemented.

VIA Mark CoreFusion is the smallest model and combines a VIA C3 processor (Nehemiah + processor core) with a VIA Apollo PLE133T northbridge . This combination results in the support of PC133 SDRAM and an ISA bus (via the VT82C686B south bridge ). This ISA bus is particularly important for industrial applications in which special measurement cards and the like are used. The graphics capability is rather below average because of the older Twister-T graphics solution. In particular, 2D capabilities such as hardware-accelerated rotation of the screen output are not supported.

VIA Luke CoreFusion has largely eliminated this shortcoming . Its integrated VIA CN400 Northbridge with VIA UniChrome Pro graphics core has much more sophisticated graphics capabilities. The Nehemiah + processor core of the VIA C3 is still used as the main processor . However, with this CoreFusion variant, due to the changed southbridge connection, the ISA bus has to be dispensed with: Instead of the PCI bus , V-Link is now used, which requires a VIA southbridge from the VT8231 that no longer supports ISA Offer. However, DDR-SDRAM up to DDR / 400 is now used.

John (not realized)

VIA John CoreFusion is planned as a third variant . In this variant, the Esther processor core of the VIA C7 is to be combined with a suitable Northbridge with Chrome9 HC graphics core. As a result, support for DDR2 SDRAM as well as 3D functions at DirectX 9.0c level and extended support for video acceleration ( Chromotion engine ) will be available.
