VORTAC
VORTAC is an abbreviation commonly used in aviation . It describes a radio beacon that is used both militarily and civilly . VORTAC is a combination of VOR and TACAN .
VOR stands for very high frequency omnidirectional radio range (German VHF rotary radio beacon ), TAC for TACTICAL - tactical.
A VORTAC navigation system is used similarly to a VOR ( rotary radio beacon ) / DME ( range finder ). The VORTAC can give aircraft a so-called radial , which indicates the angle between the magnetic north pole at the location of the navigation system and the current position of the aircraft . This means that the pilot knows his position line . In addition, a suitable receiver can measure the distance to the navigation system. By combining the radial, the distance to the transmitter and the position of the transmitter, you can then determine the exact position of the aircraft.
The radio emissions from these radio stations are safety-relevant or safety-of-life transmissions, they must be protected from interference and are an important part of navigation .
