Painted vaults in Vrå Church
The vaulted ceilings in Vrå Church were painted around 1510. In the choir , a scene reflects something of the customs and morals of the time. It is a painting in which the soul of someone who has just passed away is argued.
An old man is lying on his deathbed , in front of him a woman with a death candle in her hand. Right next to it, the young widow is losing herself with her lover - or are they relatives who ravage his fortune? - and both rummage around in the inherited gold box. Another person pours wine from an amphora. His soul , portrayed as a small child, is taken to heaven , but is prevented from doing so by a hideous devil who has wrapped his long tail around his left lower leg. Of course, the saving Archangel Michael is already there with his sword drawn and far reaching.
A banner with the text “Vordh thy ey adh han er døth, men vi hawe the guld sa rødh” runs through the picture ( don't worry that he's dead, we have the gold so red ), which reproduces the remark too what the widow standing behind her lover is whispering to him.
