Valbom is a city in the county Gondomar in the district of Porto in Portugal . The place lies north on the Douro River and has long been a center for fishermen. The place name goes back to its favorable location in the valley of the Ribeiro de Gramido ( Portuguese : Vale bom, dt : Good valley).

history

Finds show that humans have been present in the district since the Paleolithic , but concrete evidence of a settlement in Valbom has only been available since the Romans , who called the area Vallisbona. Presumably, today's place was created in the course of repopulations during the Reconquista . In 1122 Valbom was already an independent municipality.

The municipality has always belonged unchanged to the Gondomar district, but it lost territory in 1898 when it was ceded to the municipality of Campanhã .

On August 23, 1986 Valbom was elevated to a small town ( Vila ), and on January 26, 2005 to a city ( Cidade ).
