Valdensinia heterodoxa ( anamorphic : Valdensia heterodoxa ) is a species of fungus from the monotypic genus Valdensinia from the family of sclerotia cup relatives (Sclerotiniaceae) and lives parasitically on various species of blueberries . However, the fungus has also been observed on 30 different herbaceous and woody plant species, e.g. E.g .: beech , lily of the valley , hazel , bird cherry , rowanberry .

features

The fungus forms a crust-shaped, indeterminable stroma on the petioles and leaf veins of blueberries and cranberries . The apothecia are bowl-shaped to flat, pale brown, stalked and 2–5 mm in size. The stem is 4–15 mm long and 0.5–1.5 mm thick. The asci are 80-110 × 7-10 μm in size. The ascospores are 10–13.5 × 4.5–5.5 μm in size, unicellular, elliptical and provided with two or more oil droplets. The minor crop form is common and forms many brown spots on blueberry leaves. The leaves look like speckled. The large, star-shaped conidia are characteristic.

Ecology and occurrence

Valdensinia heterodoxa lives parasitically on blueberries and lingonberries, but has been detected on a number of other plants such as beech , lily of the valley , common hazel , bird cherry and rowan . The fungus is common and appears to be found across most of Europe and western Canada. Fruiting bodies are formed in spring to summer. The fungus survives with sclerotia, which are mainly formed along the median nerve of the leaves.
