Life

Valentin Horn's childhood home in Hadamar-Steinbach

Valentin Horn's parents' house is the house at number 23 on Steinbacher Langstrasse, which is one of Steinbach's historic buildings . After studying agriculture at the University of Göttingen and the Ludwigs University in Giessen (name today: Justus Liebig University in Giessen ), Valentin Horn worked for a few years as an assistant at the Giessen Institute of Agricultural Chemistry, where in 1928 he received a doctorate in animal nutrition. phil. doctorate (the agricultural institutes were then still part of Department II of the Philosophical Faculty). Horn also studied veterinary medicine. In 1935 he completed his habilitation with the agricultural chemist Wilhelm Kleberger (1878–1935). From 1936 to 1940 Horn was a full professor of agricultural chemistry and veterinary physiology at the Ankara Agricultural University (YZE), where he taught animal nutrition. Helmut Heiber suspects the reason for the move to Ankara is that the geologist from Giessen and leading Nazi lecturer Karl Hummel Horn prevented his appointment to a chair in Giessen for ideological reasons. A number of German exiled scientists were in Ankara at this time. From 1940 Horn headed the Institute for Animal Nutrition at the Agricultural Research Institute of the Polish General Government in Puławy on the Vistula.

In 1948 he took over the chair for veterinary physiology and biochemistry at the veterinary faculty of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Giessen as a lecturer. This institute went back to an Extraordinariat for Veterinary Physiology, which had already been established in 1938. In 1950, it became a full professor at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen - as the successor to Ludwig University was now called. In the same year, Horn had Karl Bürker (1872–1957) re-qualified for veterinary physiology and animal nutrition. On April 1, 1951, he became a full professor of veterinary physiology; he held this position until 1970.

Horn was the founder and first president of the "German-Turkish Society" in Gießen and rector of the Justus Liebig University from 1953 to 1955 (successor to Eduard von Boguslawski ). In 1955 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . He belonged to the Catholic student union WKSt.V. Unitas-Cheruskia casting in the Unitas Association .
