Valentin Afanassjewitsch Koptjug

Valentin Afanassjewitsch Koptjug ( Russian Валентин Афанасьевич Коптюг ; born June 9, 1931 in Juchnow , Kaluga Oblast ; † January 10, 1997 in Moscow ) was a Soviet scientist specializing in physical and organic chemistry .

Life

When he was attending school, his family was evacuated because of the Great Patriotic War . In 1949 he finished school in Samarqand and graduated from the Chemical-Technical Dmitri Mendeleev University in 1954 . From 1978 to 1980 he was Chancellor of Novosibirsk State University . Koptjug made contributions to the development of synthetic, physical and applied chemistry . He also founded several large scientific schools in the field of organic chemistry and chemoinformatics .

Koptjug received the following awards and honors: Badge of Honor of the Soviet Union (1967), Order of the Red Labor Banner (1975), Order of Lenin (1981, 1986), Hero of Socialist Labor (1986), Lenin Prize (1990). Since 1996 he was an honorary citizen of Novosibirsk .

A memorial was erected to him and a street in Akademgorodok , Novosibirsk was named after him. There are also several awards and grants of his name for students and academics. Valentin Koptyug was buried in Novosibirsk.
