The palm donkey ride on Palm Sunday

Valentin Pfeifenberger (born November 13, 1914 in Zederhaus ; † July 7, 2004 in Tamsweg ) was pastor of Thomatal , district rifle trustee of Lungau , honorary bishop of the United to Tamsweg and honorary citizen of the communities Thomatal and Zederhaus.

Valentin Pfeifenberger studied theology and philosophy and was ordained priest on May 9, 1940 in Salzburg Cathedral. He then worked as a cooperator in Vigaun , Wagrain , Unken and Ellmau . In 1951 he was appointed pastor of Thierbach . Since 1956 he was pastor of Thomatal, from 1961 he was also entrusted with duties in the Tamsweg parish.

Became known clergyman Council Pfeifenberger not only by its striking appearance - he wore since his time as a cooperator in Tyrol a costume of Wildschönauer Sturmlöda - but above all by his penchant for unusual customs.

A special custom was cultivated every year on Palm Sunday, when Pfeifenberger, riding a donkey, led a procession through Thomatal, based on the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem.

Other customs that were revived by the "Bishop of Lungau", as Pfeifenberger was called, included the so-called "Sauhaxnopfer" or the so-called "Rosstag" on the day of St. George, on which a "Georgiritt" was held.
