The rock valerian ( Valeriana saxatilis ) is a species of plant from the subfamily of the valerian family (Valerianoideae), which occurs in the limestone regions of the Eastern Alps.
description
They are perennial herbs ( hemicryptophyte ). The stems, which are mostly only branched in the area of the inflorescence, reach heights of 5 to 30 cm.
The undivided basal sheets are broadly oval to spatulate. In addition to the central rib, two other side ribs can often be seen that run forward in an arc. In contrast to the similar mountain valerian, there are at most one pair of stem leaves. These are much smaller than the basal leaves and linear in shape.
The 1–2 mm long, mostly white, sometimes slightly pink flowers are in panicles . These are less floriferous and not as clearly umbrella-shaped as most other valerian species. Often, for example, the lowest side branches stand out clearly from the rest of the inflorescence.
The flowering period is between June and July.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.
Distribution and location requirements
The species grows in subalpine to alpine limestone crevices. In Central Europe it is a character species of the Potentilletum caulescentis, but also occurs in the Caricion davallianae. In the Allgäu Alps it rises to over 2000 meters.
Its distribution area extends from eastern Switzerland over the eastern limestone Alps to the southeast over the limestone mountains of Yugoslavia to Albania. It includes Germany, Italy, Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania and Romania. An isolated occurrence is in the Apuan Alps .
Systematics
One can distinguish between two subspecies:
- Valeriana saxatilis L. subsp. saxatilis
- Valeriana saxatilis subsp. pancicii (Halácsy & Bald.) Ockendon (Syn .: Valeriana pancicii Halácsy & Bald. ): It occurs in Serbia, Montenegro and Albania.
