Valerie Young
Valerie Isobel Mary "Val" Young (born Valerie Sloper * August 10, 1937 in Ashburton ) is a former New Zealand shot putter and discus thrower .
At the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, she was fifth in the shot put. Two years later she won the shot put at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff in 1958 and won bronze in the discus throw. In 1960 she was fourth in the shot put and tenth in the discus throw at the Olympic Games in Rome .
After her marriage, she managed a double victory in the shot put and discus throw at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth in 1962 . At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, she came fourth in the shot put and 13th in the discus throw. In 1966 she defended both titles at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston in 1966 , and in 1974, at the end of her career, she won silver in the shot put at the British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch .
