Valkyrie II was the unsuccessful British challenger in the eighth America's Cup competition in 1893 against the American defender yacht Vigilant .

Valkyrie II was a gaff rigged racing cutter designed by the then renowned Scottish yacht designer George Lennox Watson . She was built side by side with the new racing yacht HMY Britannia of the Prince of Wales and later King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Edward VII at the D. & W. Henderson & Company shipyard in Partick on the Clyde on the River Clyde in Scotland . It was owned by Windham Thomas Wyndham-Quin, 4th Earl of Dunraven and Mount-Earl, member of the Royal Yacht Squadron .

The yacht Valkyrie II had a wooden hull on steel frames and a deck made of whitepine (pine). The launch took place on April 29, 1893 one week after the Britannia .

Valkyrie II crossed the North Atlantic to North America to compete as a British challenger in the 8th America's Cup in October of that year. She lost all three races of the regatta against the defensive yacht Vigilant designed by Nathanael Herreshoff and sailing under the stand of the New York Yacht Club .

Valkyrie II leadership team during America's Cup races:

  • Skipper : William Cranfield
  • Afterguard (tactics and navigation): Captain Lemon Cranfield, Captain Martin F. Lyon, H. Maitland Kersey, George L. Watson, Lady Rachel Wyndham-Quin, Lady Eileen Wyndham-Quin.

Valkyrie II only had a short yacht life of a good year. On July 5, 1894, she collided with the racing cutter Satanita owned by AD Clarke during the Mud Hook regatta on the Firth of Clyde . One crew member died in this accident . The yacht Valkyrie II broke apart and sank nine minutes later.
