The Vallée du Grand-Saint-Bernard ( Italian Valle del Gran San Bernardo , German Valley of the Great Saint Bernard ) together with the Valpelline Valley form a side valley of the Aosta Valley .

geography

From the junction of the two valleys near Gignod , the valley runs in a north-westerly direction to the Great St. Bernhard Pass .

The main watercourses are: Artanavaz , which has its source in the area of ​​the Great St. Bernard, and the Buthier de Valpelline, from the Valpelline valley. From the confluence at Gignod they form the Buthier , which flows into the Dora Baltea in Aosta .

The communes in the valley are: Gignod, Alone , Étroubles , Saint-Oyen and Saint-Rhémy-en-Bosses .

North-South connection

The European route 27 runs through the valley . It is the connection from the Aosta Valley through the 5.82 km long Great St. Bernard Tunnel into the Swiss Rhone Valley , which already existed at the time of the Roman Empire and later as part of the Via Francigena pilgrimage to Rome.
