Live and act

Valter Hugo Mãe at the Brazilian book fair Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty (2011)

Mãe grew up after moving from Angola in Paços de Ferreira and from 1980 in Vila do Conde in northern Portugal, where he now lives after completing his studies in law and Portuguese literature .

Mãe has published five novels so far ; for o remorso de baltazar serapião he was awarded the Prémio José Saramago in 2007 . At the award ceremony, José Saramago called the novel a “literary tsunami”. He also writes poetry and children's books. Since his participation in the literary event Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty in 2011 , he has also been popular in Brazil . It has been translated into French , English and Italian , and further translations into German, Spanish and Hebrew are in preparation. A stylistic peculiarity of his texts is that they, like his (artist) name, are consistently kept in lower case letters .

Mãe is the singer of the pop band Governo ("Government") and an illustrator. In 2007 he exhibited his pictures publicly for the first time in Porto .
