history
The village of Saulimbo was conquered by the Portuguese officer Henrique de Carvalho at the end of the 19th century. The Portuguese colonial administration founded a new town here and named it Henrique de Carvalho , after the commander of the conquest. The place grew as a result, and in 1923 it became a small town ( Vila ) and the capital of the then Lunda district. On May 28, 1956 he was raised to the city ( Cidade ).
After Angola's independence in 1975, the place dropped its Portuguese place name and has since borne its current name, which is based on the time before the Portuguese occupation.
During the Angolan civil war (1975-2002) internally displaced persons fled to Saurimo.

Near the city is the fourth largest diamond mine in the world, the Catoca mine . With the construction of a diamond cutting factory on site in 2019, the commercialization of the stones, previously only sold as rough diamonds, is to be promoted.
In Saurimo, planning of the Nova Vida (German: New Life ) residential project began in 2010. Around 3,000 condominiums for employees in the diamond industry and their families are to be created. The whole thing is financed by Endiama . The village will also have sports fields, schools, libraries, its own university and other basic infrastructure facilities. The project is 10 km from the city center and 20 kilometers from the Saurimo Catoca .

Sports
The football club Progresso da Lunda Sul rose in 2014 for the first time in the first division of Angola, the Girabola . He welcomes his guests in the city's Estádio Municipal das Mangueiras , which seats 15,000.
After the province of Lunda Sul had no club in the first division for decades, the provincial government hoped that the rise of the club from Saurimo would increase awareness and visibility of the remote region in Angola.
With the newly founded club Juventude de Saurimo in 2018, another team from the city is now playing in the same stadium. The club played in the Girabola 2018/19 season in the Angolan House of Lords and then relegated back to the second division.
After Progresso da Lunda Sul's relegation from the second division, Juventude de Saurimo is now the city's most important football club (as of 2020).
