Vegetative characteristics

Vancouveria planipetala is a perennial herbaceous plant . A mostly underground, relatively short rhizome is formed. The leaves are arranged in a rosette and are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The relatively long petiole is reddish. The compound leaf blade consists of heart-shaped leaflets.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period in North America extends from May and June. A panicle inflorescence with pendulous flowers is located on a long, upright inflorescence stem .

The relatively small flowers are hermaphroditic. The six inner sepals look like petals and are a few millimeters long, white and bent back or up, stretched away from the center of the flower. The real petals, which are white or purple in color and flat or notched, are attached to the sepals. There are six stamens . The relatively large ovary is shiny.

Occurrence

Vancouveria planipetala occurs only in the western US states of northwestern California and southwestern Oregon , it occurs only in the Klamath Mountains and the northern California coastal mountains .

Vancouveria planipetala grows in forests, especially coastal redwood forests.
