Vanilla andamanica is a species of plant in the genus Vanilla ( Vanilla ) in the orchid family (Orchidaceae). It grows as a climbing plant on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands .

description

Vanilla andamanica is an evergreen climber. The leathery leaves are elongated to lanceolate, with a long tip at the front. The petiole measures 1 to 1.5 centimeters, the leaf is 14 to 19 centimeters long and 2.5 to 4 centimeters wide.

The racemose inflorescence is multi-flowered, the inflorescence axis is 2 to 3 centimeters long. The bracts are oval to elongated, blunt or somewhat pointed, 0.4 to 0.5 inches long. The ovary and flower stalk together measure 2 centimeters. The petals become 5 centimeters long. The three outer petals ( sepals ) are elongated to lanceolate and almost blunt at the tip. The petals are inverted-lanceolate, slightly narrowed at the base, ending bluntly at the tip. The lip is only very indistinctly lobed. The lower part of the lip forms a tube, the front edge is wavy. The middle lobe is densely covered in front with long hair directed backwards. Three thick, rough veins run along the lip; in the middle there is a place densely covered with branched hair. The column is 3.5 centimeters long and has rounded wings.

distribution

Vanilla andamanica occurs in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands . Due to the small distribution area, the population is considered to be sensitive to disturbances.

Systematics and botanical history

This orchid was described by Robert Allen Rolfe in 1918 after a collection by CE Parkinson.

Within the genus Vanilla , Vanilla albida is classified in the subgenus Xanata and there in the Thethya section , which contains all species of the palaeotropic plants . It is particularly similar to the Southeast Asian Vanilla albida , but has larger flowers and other appendages on the lip. Other related species are Vanilla havilandii , Vanilla montana , Vanilla moonii , Vanilla sanjappae and Vanilla yersiniana .
