Vansjø (more rarely also Vannsjø ) is a lake in the province ( Fylke ) Viken , which extends over the municipalities of Moss , Råde and Våler . With an area of 35.6 km² it is the 35th largest lake in Norway.

location

Vansjø is located in the southeast of the country in the area of the former Fylkes Østfold in the municipalities of Moss, Våler and Råde. In the lake, which is very branched, there are several islands, including Gressøya, Dillingøya and Burumøya. The north-eastern section is called Rosefjorden, in the west near the city of Moss are the areas Vestfjorden, Årvollfjorden and Vannemfjorden. The Mosselva River flows into the Oslofjord at Moss . The most important tributary is the Hobølelva in the northeast, which has its sources in the Østmarka area near Oslo.

The bank area in the south and west of the lake in particular is more densely populated. Europastraße 6 (E6) and Moss Airport are also located there . There are also tracks of the Østfoldbanen railway line .

Ecological condition

In 1992 the nature reserves Vestre Vansjø and Moskjæra were established. The lake serves as a source of drinking water for Moss, and 17 species of fish lived there in 2016. The water is heavily polluted by sewage from the surrounding settlements, residues from the agricultural use of the area and the nearby airport. Perfluorooctanoic acid , for example , which was used in fire-fighting exercises, got into the lake from the airport .

Surname

The name of the lake is derived from the old name for Rygge , which is Varna . It is assumed that this term is derived from the Old Norse word “vǫrn” (German: “protection”), but the assumption is not certain.
