The Varmakelda [ ˈvaɹmaˌʧɛlda ] ( Faroese for "warm spring") is the only thermal spring in the Faroe Islands near the town of Fuglafjørður on Eysturoy .

The source is about four kilometers south of Fuglafjørður. When you have passed Kambsdalur , the old coastal road branches off to the left to Leirvík , and after about a kilometer you will find the signposted spring towards the coast. It has a constant temperature of 18 ° C and is evidence of the volcanism that once formed the Faroe Islands. ( See: Geology and Geography of the Faroe Islands .) On site you can see the marked stone that marks the source. From there, the water flows underground or covered by grass about 240 meters down the slope into the Atlantic. An open warm water source cannot be seen.

Since the Middle Ages, the Faroese have attributed special healing powers to this spring: traditionally, people met here at the summer solstice to dance and sing peacefully in the open air. According to this tradition, the Varmakeldustevna takes place every two years on the first weekend in July (2007: June 30th and July 1st). This is a folk festival with a regatta for the championship in Faroese rowing .
