Vartan İhmalyan

Vartan İhmalyan (born March 22, 1913 in Konya , † 1987 in Moscow , Soviet Union ) was a Turkish-Armenian writer, civil engineer and member of the Communist Party of Turkey . He is known throughout Turkey as İhmal Amca ( Uncle Ihmal ) because he wrote numerous famous fairy tales . He is the brother of the painter Jak İhmalyan .

Life

Vartan İhmalyan was born in Konya to an Armenian family. After graduating from Kadıköy High School in Istanbul , he was drafted into the Turkish Army . After he had completed his military service in Çivril near Denizli from 1937 to 1939 , he attended Robert College , which he graduated in 1944. He began studying architecture at the Istanbul Academy of Fine Arts . With the help of his schoolmate Rasih Güran, he joined the Communist Party of Turkey. In 1944 he was arrested and sentenced in the Sansaryan Han of Sirkeci . After being convicted again in 1946, he was imprisoned in Sansaryan Han for three months and then left Turkey .

He and his wife wanted to emigrate to the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic , but went to Paris . Since he was also held there, he had to live in France for 16 years on a transit visa . In 1956 he was sent to Budapest by the Turkish Communist Party to broadcast radio programs in the Turkish language . Because of the Hungarian popular uprising , he emigrated to Czechoslovakia . In Prague he met Nâzım Hikmet . With his help, he settled in Warsaw . After Radio Warsaw's Turkey department was closed, he went to the People's Republic of China , where he worked for the Turkish service at Beijing Radio . Because of the Sino-Soviet quarrel , he went to Moscow in 1961, where he presented programs in Turkish on Radio Moscow.

Vartan İhmalyan mainly wrote fairy tales and children's books. His first book of fairy tales was Sihirli Çiçek (Magic Flower), which was published in Bulgaria in Turkish. His fairy tale Duş (shower) was awarded in Turkey in 1972. The story book İhmal Amca , written in Turkey for children, was published together with his memories Bir Yaşamın Öyküsü (The Story of a Life).
