Vasantrao Phulsing Naik

Vasantrao Phulsing Naik (born July 1, 1913 in Gahuli , Yavatmal District , Berar Province , British India ; † August 19, 1979 in Singapore ) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress (INC), who was among other things Chief Minister between 1963 and 1975 from Maharashtra and from 1977 until his death in 1979 was a member of the Lok Sabha .

Life

After attending school, Naik, the son of Shri Phalsing Naik, first completed an undergraduate degree at Morris College , which in 1985 was renamed Vasantrao Naik Government Institute of Arts and Social Sciences after him , and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). A postgraduate studies of law at the Nagpur University he completed a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). In 1952 he was elected as a candidate for the Indian National Congress (INC) to be a member of the legislative assembly of Madhya Pradesh and was a member of it until 1957. At the same time he was deputy minister for tax revenue of this state in 1952 . After the establishment of the state of Bombay from parts of Madhya Pradesh on November 1, 1956, he was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Bombay between 1957 and 1960. At the same time he was Minister for Cooperation in 1957 and then Minister of Agriculture of Bombay in the government of Chief Minister Yeshwantrao Balwantrao Chavan .

After the establishment of the state of Maharashtra on May 1, 1960, he became a member of the Legislative Assembly of Maharashtra and was a member until 1977. At the same time, Naik took over the office of Minister for Tax Revenue in the government of Chief Minister Chavan and held this position from November 9, 1962 to November 25, 1963 in the government of Chavan's successor as Chief Minister Marotrao Sambashio Kannamwar . On December 5, 1963, after his death, he finally took over the post of Chief Minister of Maharashtra himself and held this until February 19, 1975, whereupon he was replaced by Shankarrao Chavan on February 20, 1975 . Most recently, he was elected as a candidate for the INC in the elections from March 16 to 20, 1977 as a member of the Lok Sabha , the lower house of the parliament of India . He was a member of this until his death on August 19, 1979, and during this time he represented the Washim constituency in Maharashtra .

His marriage to Vatsala Vasantrao Naik on July 6, 1941 resulted in two sons. His nephew Sudhakarrao Naik was also Chief Minister of Maharashtra between 1991 and 1993 and Governor of Himachal Pradesh from 1994 to 1995 .
