Vasily I.

Vasily I. Dmitrijewitsch ( Russian Василий I Дмитриевич ; * 1371 ; † February 28, 1425 ) was the Russian Grand Duke of Vladimir Moscow since 1389 and was born as the eldest son of Dmitri Donskoi .

Life

In 1392 he acquired Nizhny Novgorod and Murom , in 1397/1398 Vologda , Veliki Ustyug and the Komi territories . In 1404 he lost Smolensk to Lithuania .

Vasily I. initially refused to recognize Tatar rule and in December 1408 also survived an attack by the Emir Edigü on Moscow. It was only when the princes of Nizhny Novgorod (whom he had expelled) traveled to the Golden Horde and claimed the dignity of the Grand Duke that he got into difficulties in view of close contacts with his rivals ( Tver , Lithuania, Horde) and, in turn, traveled to the Horde to avoid the ruling Khan Gelal-ed-Din (r. 1411/2) to be confirmed as Russian Grand Duke (1412).

family

In January 1391 he married Sofia Vytautaitė (1371-1453), the daughter of Grand Duke Vytautas (Witold) of Lithuania . After his death she also took over the guardianship government for their son, Wassili II. (* 1415).
