Vassula Rydén (born January 18, 1942 in Heliopolis , Egypt ) is a writer who addresses her alleged religious visions .

biography

Vassula Rydén was born in Egypt to Greek Orthodox parents . She attended school in Egypt. At the age of 15 she emigrated to Europe.

In November 1966 she got her first marriage to a Swede in Lausanne (Switzerland). This marriage ended in divorce in November 1980 in Sweden . In June 1981 she married Per Rydén, also a Swedish citizen, who she married in October 1991 in a Greek Orthodox church in Lausanne. She has two sons, born in 1971 and 1976. Since both Rydén's first and her second husband worked in developing countries, she lived in Sierra Leone , Sudan , Ethiopia , Mozambique and Bangladesh, among others . Vassula Rydén worked as a painter and model during these years and became the national tennis champion of Bangladesh in Dhaka . In Ethiopia she won a competition under her married name Vassula Holmberg to portray the Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie as a template for an 18-piece stamp series in oil. The stamps came out in 1973.

Visions

At the end of November 1985, while Rydén was living in Bangladesh , an invisible being allegedly appeared to her who identified himself as Daniel's guardian angel . The being made contact by using Rydén's right writing hand without her still having control over the writing hand. Texts and drawings were created in this way. Rydén claims to have received messages in English, usually several hours a day.

Three months later she noticed the presence of another being who introduced himself as God the Father. After a week of fasting, Rydén reported that a new being had made contact who had revealed himself to be Jesus . The work True Life in God , according to Rydén, was created through his inspirations. Later other beings appeared in their visions: the mother of Jesus Mary , the archangel Michael , the devil and other religious figures. The content of the news is of a religious nature, partly a refresher of biblical texts in modern language, partly teachings of the Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox churches. The main themes are Christian unity, a commitment to the Pope, the impending time of purification, and the call to make this news known in order to end the division of Christians and to reconcile all religions.

Art historian Joe Nickell , best known for his studies of paranormal phenomena, has studied the manuscripts, the messages of which, according to Ryden, allegedly come directly from various supernatural figures, including Jesus, Mary and the Devil. According to Ryden, the supernatural beings would shake hands with her and in this way let out messages. Nickell explains that the typographical errors contained therein are the same for all alleged creatures and that they are also identical to the typographical errors of the author in her usual texts. He therefore does not consider these manuscripts to be a testimony to the connection with supernatural beings, but rather products of the writer who, in the sense of self-deception, consider them to be authentic.

Attitude of the Catholic Church

Rydén's work was examined by the Roman Catholic Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith , chaired by Cardinal Ratzinger , which in 1995 came to the conclusion that it was not a matter of supernatural messages but of the results of private meditations. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith formulated the result: “Considering that, despite some positive aspects, the activities of Vassula Ryden are having a negative effect, this Congregation asks that the bishops intervene, inform their believers adequately and that no Rydenians spread in their dioceses Allow ideas. Finally, she urges all believers not to regard the writings and interventions of Mrs. Vassula Ryden as supernatural and to keep the faith that the Lord has entrusted to the Church pure. "

In January 2005, according to the website of Rydén's organization TLIG, the affairs of the Catholic Church were settled. A conference in Los Angeles planned for the beginning of 2006 was canceled by church sponsors because, in the opinion of the bishop, the Vatican rejection from 1995 was still fully valid. He described contrary statements by a spokeswoman for Rydén as a “serious misinterpretation of the Vatican point of view”.

Cardinal William Levada , Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, confirmed on January 25, 2007 that the 1995 decision regarding the Congregation's judgment on the scriptures examined was still in effect and “that Catholics would participate in the prayer groups organized by Ms. Vassula Ryden , does not appear appropriate. "

In 1995 the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith of the Catholic Church published a notification on the writings of Rydén, which was also published in the official Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, as well as in the AAS. Rydén's revelations should not be viewed as supernatural. The bishops are called upon to enlighten the faithful about Rydans and to prevent their ideas from spreading. The notification describes the ecclesiastical disorder caused by her as follows: “Incidentally, Mrs. Ryden, who usually takes part in the sacraments of the Catholic Church, although she is Greek Orthodox, arouses quite astonishment in some places in Catholic surroundings. It seems to take precedence over every ecclesiastical jurisdiction and every ecclesiastical regulation and in fact causes an ecumenical disorder which arouses displeasure among not a few authorities, clergy and believers in their own church, because it places itself outside the discipline of this church.
