history

The history of today's Veeco Instruments, Inc. goes back to an earlier company that was founded in 1945 by two scientists from the Manhattan Project ; they had developed a helium leak detector back then. The original name "Veeco" stood for Vacuum Electronic Equipment Company . In the 1960s, the original Veeco merged with Lambda, a power supply manufacturer, and in the late 1980s the company was bought by the UK company Unitech .

In 1990, Edward H. Braun and a group of senior company executives acquired Unitech's Instruments division in a management buyout . The company again used the Veeco Instruments brand and went public on the Nasdaq in 1994 . At that point, Veeco had sales of around $ 30 million. Since then, the company has increasingly focused on delivering manufacturing equipment. It has also grown steadily through both internal development and strategic acquisitions (the company has made more than a dozen acquisitions to date).

In July 2007, EH Braun became Chairman of the Board and John R. Peeler joined the company as Chief Executive Officer . Peeler was previously President of the Communications Test and Measurement Division of JDS Uniphase Corporation .

In October 2010, Veeco announced the sale of the measuring equipment division to Bruker Corporation for $ 229.4 million. Veeco is now concentrating exclusively on the provision of process systems.

In May 2017, the takeover of the manufacturer of production systems for the semiconductor industry Ultratech was completed.

Services

Veeco primarily offers process systems for manufacturers of extremely bright light emitting diodes (so-called high brightness light emitting diodes , HB-LEDs) and solar cells. Veeco is also an important supplier for hard disk manufacturers for the production of thin-film magnetic heads. Your products enable higher surface density - the amount of data that can be stored - and improve yield and consistency. They provide both front-end and back-end technologies, including facilities for:
