Vello Helk

Vello Helk (born September 23, 1923 in Varstu , Võru County , Estonia , † March 14, 2014 in Birkerød ) was a Danish historian and archivist .

Life

After he was drafted into service in the German Wehrmacht in 1944, he went to Denmark as a DP after the end of the Second World War . From 1947 he studied history, Latin and German at the University of Aarhus . He focused on the northern European history of the 16th and 17th centuries; his specialty was the Norwegian Jesuit Laurentius Nicolai Norvegus . He has also researched and published on the Jesuits in Tartu and on Scandinavian students at southern European universities.

For more than 30 years (1959–1990) Helk worked at the Danish National Archives Rigsarkivet , from 1970 to 1990 as department head of the 4th section and from 1978 to 1979 as Denmark's deputy archivist. He retired in 1990.

In 1996 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Tartu .

From 1958 Helk was married to the music teacher Annemarie Jepsen (* 1924).
