Vera Michalski-Hoffmann (born November 5, 1954 in Basel ) is a Swiss publisher.

Life

Vera Hoffmann's father is the biologist and co-founder of the WWF Luc Hoffmann , her mother is Daria Razumovsky (1925–2002). She has the siblings Maja , Andre and Daschenka. She is a shareholder in the Swiss industrial company Hoffmann-La Roche .

Hoffmann grew up in the Camargue and began studying at the University Institute for International Studies and Development ( Institut de hautes études internationales et du développement, IHEID ) in Geneva , which she dropped out. In 1983 she married the Polish dissident Jan Michalski (1953-2002), with whom she founded the publishing house Les Éditions Noir sur Blanc in Montricher in 1986 . Shortly before the collapse of the Eastern Bloc , the publishing house began to take care of the publication of forbidden Eastern European political and aesthetic literature.

The publishers they founded and took over in the following years, including “Noir sur Blanc”, “Les Editions Phébus”, “Buchet Chastel”, “Maren Sell Éditeurs” and Wydawnictwo Literackie in Switzerland, France and Poland, are part of the “Libella SA ”in Lausanne . The bookshops “Oficyna Literacka” in Warsaw and Krakow and the traditional Librairie polonaise de Paris are also part of it. Your publishers issued 350 new publications in 2013.

Michalski heads the "Jan Michalski Foundation" in Montricher, which u. a. supports the Jaipur Literature Festival , the Solothurn Literature Days , the International Literature Festival Leukerbad and the Lausanne bookshop “Payot”. Michalski donated the Prix Jan Michalski in 2010. Its laureates in the early years were Aleksandar Hemon , György Dragomán , Julia Lovell and Mahmoud Dowlatabadi . In Montricher, she set up a writer's house for writers in residence , which was first moved into in 2015.

Michalski was awarded the “Lilas de l'éditrice” editor's prize in 2010. In 1995 she received the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland , she is Chevalier des Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and also received the Gloria Artis Medal for Cultural Merit in Poland in 2011 and the Bene Merito Order of Merit in Poland .
