history

In 1934, several Basel choir conductors petitioned the central board of the Swiss Choir Association ( integrated into the Swiss Choir Association since 1977 ) to replace three members of the jury at the upcoming Swiss Song Festival in Basel in 1935 for lack of qualifications. After the petition request had been successfully implemented , it was decided to found the Northwestern Switzerland Choir Conductors Association, which took place on March 16, 1935 in Basel. The well-known composer Walther Aeschbacher was elected as the founding president. In the first few years, the association formed its structures: the association organ Mitteilungen was initiated, its own library was set up and series of lectures were organized. a. Edgar Refardt , Conrad Beck , Walter Müller von Kulm , Fritz Gersbach and Joseph Bovet gave lectures.

In 1955, the association was formed with the Cantonal Association of Basel-City Choral Societies ( integrated into the Basel Choir Association since 2003 ) to form a working group to promote choral singing in the region. Aeschbacher's successor, Ernst Müller, initiated the program I sing along with when everything sings on Radio Basel . As the highlight of this cooperation, a day of the song was organized in the Stadtcasino Basel on March 1, 1959 under the patronage of National Council President Eugen Dietschi .

Since it was founded, there has been close cooperation with the Eastern Swiss Professional Conductors' Association , three years older , with which soloist auditions were held from 1936 to 1986 and joint training courses in choral conducting are still offered today.

In 2010 the association celebrated its 75th anniversary with a large gala concert with the participation of choirs from the region led by its members. In the same year he joined the newly founded IG CHorama . In 2014 the name was changed gender neutral .

The association archive has been cataloged in the Basel-Stadt State Archives since 2018.
