The VAUNET - Association of Private Media e. V. (until May 20, 2018: Association of Private Broadcasting and Telemedia eV (VPRT), previously until October 16, 2006: Association of Private Broadcasting and Telecommunication e.V. ) is a trade association and represents the interests of private providers of radio, television, Media services or comparable tele and online media. The offers are aimed at the general public, special target groups and connected user groups. This includes not only television and radio in the traditional sense, but also video-on-demand offers and the operation of user-generated content and social media platforms. VAUNET has the specialist areas of radio and audio services as well as television and multimedia as well as an interdisciplinary technology and innovation forum (TIF).

VAUNET's headquarters are in Berlin; the association also has an office in Brussels .
tasks
VAUNET has set itself the task of positioning the audiovisual industry as a whole as one of the largest economic sectors in Germany and the engine of the creative economy. To this end, he wants to focus even more on the convergent development of the audiovisual media markets in the future, in order to actively help shape the framework conditions at national and European level. This includes in particular the following tasks and goals:
- Negotiations with legislative and executive bodies in the federal and state governments, the media outlets and the responsible institutions at European level with the aim of optimizing the economic and legal framework in the interests of the content providers.
- Negotiations with the owners of rights that are affected and used by private broadcasting offers and electronic media, especially with the collecting societies with regard to the conclusion of general contracts for the association members.
- Position determination and, if necessary, negotiation in the interests of content providers with companies from the infrastructure sector (networks / platforms / end devices) as well as access and service providers with the aim of fair and non-discriminatory access and competition.
- Representation of the interests of members in national and international bodies dealing with the legal, economic and technological framework of private electronic media offers.
- General advice and support for member companies in media law, technical, economic and media policy issues.
- Organization of the exchange of information between the members.
Members
Around 150 companies from the radio, television and electronic media industries. Within the association, the members are organized into three departments: Radio and Audio Services, Television and Multimedia and the Technology and Innovation Platform. The radio department includes around 50 national and regional private radio broadcasters such as B. Antenne Bayern , Metropolm FM and Radio ffn . The television department includes around 80 national, state and regional TV broadcasters such as B. the broadcasters of the RTL media group , the ProSiebenSat.1 group , but also amazon Media and Sony Pictures . The technology and innovation forum includes companies from the infrastructure sector, such as satellite operators, antenna manufacturers, private cable system operators and technical service providers, e.g. B. Deutsche Telekom , Astra Germany , Media Broadcast and Tele Columbus .
history
VAUNET was founded on October 1st, 1990 as VPRT. At that time, the two predecessor associations “Federal Association of Private Broadcasting and Telecommunications” (BPRT) and “Federal Association of Cable and Satellite” (BKS) merged. The television journalist Peter Scholl-Latour , previously president of the BPRT, was elected as the first president at the founding meeting. Jürgen Doetz from the BKS became executive vice-president . On May 21, 2018 the association was renamed VAUNET.

criticism
VAUNET is equally responsible for TV and radio stations, but in the past some of its radio members had accused the association of neglecting their interests in relation to television. This led to the departure of a large radio broadcasting network from the association in 2010.
