BKA liaison officers abroad

Since April 12, 1983 Germany has been sending VB (BKA-VB), members of the Federal Criminal Police Office , to foreign countries. The first place of employment was Bangkok (Thailand), other countries were other countries in Southeast Asia and South America until the end of the 1980s . In the 1990s, liaison officers were posted to the countries of Eastern Europe . While at first it was primarily a matter of combating drug trafficking , today organized crime and state security are also a field of activity of the liaison officers.

The liaison officers are experts in the host country (in particular the police-relevant aspects), have contacts with police associations and are able to speak the local language.

66 German liaison officers are currently working at 53 liaison offices in 50 countries. This means that Germany has the highest number of liaison officers in Europe. They mostly work from diplomatic missions. In order to carry out their duties, the officials are seconded to the Foreign Office for a period of four years .

It also works closely with INTERPOL and the police authorities in the host country.

Liaison officers are law enforcement officers with a career in higher or higher service .

For the 2006 World Cup , the national teams were assigned several liaison officers who operated from Germany.

In addition to the police, the Federal Customs Administration also uses liaison officers for itself. In addition to liaison officers at Eurozoll (Paris), Europol (The Hague) or the World Customs Organization (WZO, Brussels), there are also liaison officers from the Customs Criminal Police Office who are deployed in other countries at customs and police units. These are officials of the higher and higher service of the customs administration.

Others

In some German police stations there are liaison officers for disaster control and the fire service (example: PI Obernburg am Main ). In addition to the liaison officers at German diplomatic missions abroad that are strategically important for the fight against crime, the BKA is also represented by a liaison officer in the KRZ (crisis reaction center) of the Foreign Office (Foreign Office). The BKA liaison officer in the KRZ provides tactical and operational advice there and provides police expertise, particularly in the case of kidnapping and hostage-taking of Germans abroad.
