Verdiana Masanja

Verdiana Masanja (born October 12, 1954 in Bukoba , Tanzania ) is a Tanzanian mathematician , physicist and university professor who specializes in fluid dynamics. She is the first Tanzanian woman to do a PhD in mathematics.

life and work

Masanja attended Nyakabungo Primary School in Mwanza , then Chopre Secondary School and Jangwani High School in Dar es Salaam . In 1976 she graduated with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics , then studied at the University of Dar es Salaam while she was also a lecturer at the university. In 1981 she received a Master of Science degree in mathematics and studied for a second master's degree in physics at the Technical University of Berlin . In 1986 she did her doctorate here with Wolfgang Muschik as Dr.-Ing. with the dissertation: A Numerical Study of a Reiner-Rivlin Fluid in an Axi-Symmetrical Circular Pipe. After returning from Germany, she became a professor at the University of Dar es Salaam and stayed at the university's faculty until 2010. In 2007 she became a professor at the Université nationale du Rwanda and was appointed Research Director of the University and Deputy Vice Chancellor and Senior Advisor of the University of Kibungo in Rwanda . In 2018 she returned to Tanzania as Professor of Applied and Computational Mathematics at the Nelson Mandela African Institute for Science and Technology in Arusha . From 2003 to 2015 she was visiting professor at the Technical University of Lappeenranta , Finland and from 2017 to 2019 at the Busitema University in Tororo , Uganda . In 2011 she received the Golden Outstanding Award from the University of Dar es Salaam for her contributions to teaching and learning mathematics in Tanzania. She has served as Secretary of the Commission for Women in Mathematics in Africa, Vice President for East Africa on the Executive Committee of the African Mathematical Union, Chairwoman of the Tanzania Education Network and National Coordinator for Women’s Education in Mathematics in Africa. She is the mother of 4 children.
