Order of Merit of the Länder of the Federal Republic of Germany

The orders of merit of the federal states of the Federal Republic of Germany each represent a high distinction for the respective federal state . So far 14 of 16 federal states have donated an order of merit. In most cases, their maximum number of awards has been set. The execution of the orders of merit can be divided into:

  • Execution as a ribbon medal on the medal buckle: 2 federal states
  • Execution as a cross on the left side of the chest: 4 federal states
  • Execution as a necklace order: 8 federal states.

Remarks

The federal states and Hanseatic cities of Bremen and Hamburg have not donated any orders of merit; due to the tradition of the “Hanseatic rejection” of orders in these city-states, this is not to be expected either. The highest honors there are the Bremen Medal of Honor in gold and the Hamburg Medal of Honor in gold.
