Vergilius Palatinus

Vergilius Palatinus  becomes one in the 4th / 5th The name of the manuscript written in Capitalis rustica in the 18th century AD , which came to the library of the Lorsch monastery during the Carolingian Renaissance . From there, after the abolition of the monastery by Count Palatine Ottheinrich around 1556 , the Vergilius Palatinus was transferred to the Bibliotheca Palatina , the library of the Count Palatine near Rhine in Heidelberg . With this he was kidnapped by Duke Maximilian I of Bavaria as spoils of war and Pope Gregory XV. given. Since then, with an interruption from 1798 to 1815, during which, after being kidnapped to Paris at the behest of Napoleon Bonaparte , it was kept in the State Library there, in Vatican City in the Biblioteca apostolica Vaticana under the signature Vatican City, BAV, Vaticanus Palatinus 1631 . The Vergilius Palatinus contains works by the Roman poet P. Vergilius Maro : Fol. 1r-17r: Eclogae (fragmentary). Fol.18r-56v: Georgica (fragmentary). Fol.57r-256v: Aeneid (fragmentary). In the editions it is listed under the Sigle P. He is one of the most important text witnesses.

256 (of originally 288) leaves have been preserved.

The layout with a true stately aspect ratio of about 30 cm side height and 23 cm width, a vertical-format text area of 23 verses per page and a somewhat fluctuating font size of the manuscript gives a quite monumental character.
