The Vermilion River ( French Rivière Vermillion ) is a left tributary of the Spanish River in the Canadian province of Ontario .

The Vermilion River runs within Greater Sudbury and the Sudbury District . The river has its origin in a small lake north of Thor Lake . It flows in the upper reaches in a south-southeast direction, through Thor Lake and other lakes or river widenings. A Canadian National Railway line runs along the river. The Vermilion River turns south, flows through the town of Capreol not far from the western shore of Wanapitei Lake and then makes a sharp change in direction to the west. It runs north of Chelmsford , takes the Onaping River from the right and then flows through Vermilion Lake . The Vermilion River now flows south to Whitefish and continues west. It flows through the Wabagishik Lake and shortly afterwards flows east of Espanola into the Spanish River.

There is a hydroelectric power station at Lorne Falls Dam , above Wabagishik Lake.
