action

Kim Seung-geun owed over 200 million won and was abandoned by his girlfriend. So he decides to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge. Instead, however, he is stranded on an uninhabited island in the middle of the Han River in Seoul . Since he cannot swim, he cannot find a way to leave the island and comes to terms with his life on the island. Nobody noticed him until one day the young woman Kim Jung-yeon noticed him. She hasn't left her room for three years and spends her life online while her mother brings her food. Twice a year, during the air raid drill, Kim takes photos of the deserted streets of the city during the day. This time she spies the man on the island of Bam through her telephoto lens . She initially thinks he is an alien and observes him daily. So it also neglects the internet. The man wrote HELP in large letters on the island's beach. One day he changes it to HELLO. Thereupon she decides to send him a letter in a bottle and thus leaves her room. In the letter, which the man took more than three months to find, she also wrote HELLO. Thus begins a conversation across the river, during which the young woman gradually overcomes her fears.

However, one day the man asks who the young woman is. She prints out a picture of another woman from the Internet and wants to throw it off the bridge in the bottle. However, she decides shortly before not to do it after all. The man desperately searches the island for the bottle, but cannot find anything. At this moment people appear who want to clean up the island and arrest the man. Kim Jung-yeon, who has been watching everything, runs to meet him, but just misses him when he gets on a bus to go to the 63 Building to kill himself. But after half a year air raid drills are taking place again and so she has the opportunity to catch up with the bus by saying “My name is ... Kim Jung-yeon. Who are you? ”Welcomed.

background

The film takes up some of the social problems of the South Korean middle class . The protagonist's attempted suicide is nothing unusual in his home country, as the suicide rate in South Korea is extremely high. The desperation of both main characters and the social isolation of Kim Jung-yeon also reflect a phenomenon that is more common in this context among the Korean population: work stress due to high pressure to perform, the drying up of interpersonal values and fear of failure cause many people to escape , which ends with Kim Jung-yeon in her room and with Kim Seung-geun on Bam Island in the Han River and leads to hopelessness and reticence. The main characters each present these fears in a flashback, in which the causes for them are explained.
