London 1949: A young American beauty, Melinda Greyton, and dashing but lonely English Major Michael Curragh fall in love and get married. The problem is that he's a Soviet spy. When Melinda discovers her husband's double life and urges him to stop spying, the Russian employers fear that Melinda could pose a threat to them. Michael is supposed to kill her, but he can't do it because he loves her. His employers thereupon give him the order to commit suicide. Melinda, who is torn in her feelings, cannot prevent this, but is asked to continue playing her husband's game by the English secret service, which has been watching Michael's espionage activity for a long time.
