Helen Haye
Helen Haye (born August 28, 1874 in Assam , India , † September 1, 1957 in London ; actually Helen Hay ) was a British theater and film actress .
Life
Helen Haye, who was born in India in 1874, first worked as a Latin teacher before turning to acting. In 1898 she made her theater debut in Great Britain and then went on tour with the theater companies of Frank Benson and Herbert Beerbohm Tree . In London she appeared in 1911 as Gertrude in Shakespeare's Hamlet . Her extensive repertoire also included roles in pieces by Ibsen , Shaw and TS Eliot . From 1925 she was also seen several times on New York's Broadway . From 1916 to 1921 she occasionally appeared in silent films , but it was not until the late 1920s that she was used regularly in front of the film camera. As the wife of the professor she was in Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps ( The 39 Steps , 1935) to see. She played Countess Vronskaya in the British Tolstoy film Anna Karenina (1948) with Vivien Leigh in the title role. Other film roles were the Duchess of York alongside Leigh's husband Laurence Olivier in the Shakespeare adaptation Richard III. (1955) and 1952 Lady Catherine de Bourgh in a BBC film adaptation of Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice . She appeared on stage one last time in 1953 as the mother of the last tsar in a production of Marcelle Maurette's play Anastasia . Haye also taught acting at Lady Benson's School and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art , where the later actors John Gielgud and Charles Laughton were among her students. She also stood in front of the camera with Laughton for the comedy Herr im Haus am ( Hobson's Choice , 1954).
Helen Haye, who was married to Ernest Attenborough, died in a London nursing home in 1957 at the age of 83.
