Sally Benson (* 3. September 1897 in St. Louis , Missouri ; † 19 July 1972 in Woodland Hills , California ) was an American screenwriter and author of short stories .

Life

Benson spent the first few years of her childhood in St. Louis until she and her family moved to New York City at the age of ten . At the age of 19 she married Reynolds Benson and they had one child. A few years later, they separated. She first worked as a journalist and then wrote articles a. a. for The New Yorker . For some of her short stories she wrote under the pseudonym Esther Evarts .

In 1942 some of her stories were collected in a book entitled Meet me in St. Louis . Based on this, the film Meet Me in St. Louis was released in 1944 . Benson was also involved in this, but the script was written by others.

Her book Junior Miss , published in 1941, was also made into a film. A feature film of the same name was made in 1945, directed by George Seaton .

Benson himself turned to screenwriting from 1943 and was active in this area until the mid-1960s.

1947 she and Talbot Jennings for the screenplay of Siam Anna and the King in the category Best Adapted Screenplay for the Oscar nominated. In 1950 she received a nomination for the WGA Award from the Writers Guild of America for her work on ... and Heaven Laughs along with Oscar Millard .
