Versoaln

The approximately 350–400 year old vine at Katzenzungen Castle

Versoaln is the name of one of the oldest vines in the world. It can be found in South Tyrol near Prissian , a district of the municipality of Tesimo in South Tyrol, near Katzenzungen Castle .

Legend has it that the vine was planted in the early 15th century by a gentleman from Schlandersberg , the then owner of the castle. The origin of the name is uncertain: connections with the local dialect word verdolen ('green', like the color of the berries), with the pergola education or a corruption of Versailles (which only became known in the 17th century) are conceivable .

According to a study by the University of Göttingen , however, the vine is "only" about 350 years old, which this vine shares with some other ancient vines. However, it is the largest of these, the canopy of the vine is about 300 square meters in terms of the covered area. A nameless vine in Margreid in the South Tyrolean Unterland has been proven to have been planted in 1601 and is therefore formally older, but since it stands on a house wall, it is nowhere near the size of Versoaln. According to the Guinness Book of Records , the Stara Trta in Maribor is more than 400 years old and has the honor of being the oldest vine.

A unique white wine is made from the yield of the Versoaln (since no other plant of the same genetics is known), which bears the name of the vine and is brought out in bottles numbered 600 to 700.
