Conflans contract

The Treaty of Conflans was signed on October 5, 1465 between King Louis XI. signed by France and Charles the Bold , Count of Charolais and Regent of the Burgundian lands. The treaty was part of the peace agreement between the king and the French aristocrats who had come together against him in the Ligue du Bien public . The place of signature, Conflans Castle, is in the village of Conflans-l'Archevêque near Paris and is now part of the Charenton-le-Pont commune .

The reason for the unification of the parties was the undecided battle of Montlhéry on June 13, 1465. Louis concluded with Charles the Bold of Burgundy, the leader of the aristocratic revolt in Conflans, with the Duke of Brittany in Caen and with the other nobles in Saint-Maur Peace. Ludwig thus achieved the split in the aristocratic opposition in France.

With the Treaty of Conflans, Charles the Bold got back the Somme cities with the county of Ponthieu in Picardy , which his father had already held as pledge between 1435 and 1463. However, these areas should later be able to be bought back by Ludwig's heirs. Ludwig passed on to Charles without restrictions the property rights to the counties of Boulogne , Guines and the southern part of the county of Vermandois ( Roye , Péronne and Montdidier ), which had been under the control of the House of Valois-Burgundy since 1435 .

On September 25, 1465, Isabelle , the wife of Charles the Bold, died during the negotiations on the terms of the treaty . Ludwig therefore offered Karl the hand of his five-year-old daughter Anne with the counties of Champagne and Pontieu as a dowry . The marriage did not take place.

The peace between Karl and Ludwig XI. only lasted for a short time. Ludwig did not keep to the agreements and in 1468 Charles the Bold brought about a new alliance against Louis by, with the support of the English King Edward IV, he founded Karl von Valois , Duke von Berry, Johann von Valois , Duke von Alençon, and Franz II. , Duke of Brittany. However, Ludwig broke this alliance with his diplomatic skills in the Treaty of Ancenis in the same year .
